Special Message to Small Chemical Companies

The new REACH regulations on chemical markets in the European Union are tilted in favor of large companies who are able to pay for the high cost of animal tests for their chemicals.  However, during the first few years of implementing REACH, smaller companies have a choice to purchase the proprietary data compiled by larger companies, sell their company  … or use QSAR methods instead of animal tests in the registration process.  The REACH option of using QSAR methods to classify chemicals without expensive data seems to be one of the best-kept secrets in Europe.  There is little talk about QSAR or the nontesting option included in REACH.

We are working as quickly as possible to train chemical consultants and other specialists in the use of the QSAR Application Toolbox to implement REACH.  This QSAR Toolbox was developed under the aegis of OECD in Paris and was funded by the European Chemicals Agency.  All of the chemicals used in Europe are already included in the QSAR Toolbox for initial classification, though the available QSARs for some tests are not yet complete.   Larger companies do not support the public development of QSAR, so the only hope for developing QSAR technology quickly is for small chemical companies to join together to propel this work forward.

Your support of $500 now will benefit your chemical registration in the future.  For a donation of $5,000 or more, we will collaborate with your REACH consulting group in providing a QSAR assessment for your chemical(s).
